GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 26th May,1926.

Mr. J.F.Brenan, His Majesty's acting Consul General at Canton, in a despatch to His Majesty's Minister at Peking, dated the 17th May, a copy of which he sent to the Foreign Office as despatch No. 32, asked for further guidance about the attitude of the Hong Kong Government and of His Majesty's Government towards lending money to the Kuang-tung province.

I enclose copy of the reply which I sent to him and also copy of a confidential letter, dated the 11th May and sent to me by His Majesty's Minister at Peking, and of my reply thereto.

3.

As regards the junction line at Canton to connect the Kowloon-Canton railway with the Canton-Hankor railway, I have the honour to refer you to my secret despatch dated the 20th May, in which I suggested that a portion of the Boxer Indemnity Funds under the control of His Majesty's Government should be set aside for the purpose of financing this most important and inexpensive scheme. It would, however, be well within the means of the Hong Kong Government itself to finance the sonstruction of this short line.

4.

No surveys or estimates have yet been made

for an extension of the Fan-ling - Sha-tau-kok light railway
